Money in Kazakhstan: tenge, exchange offices and payments

Updated October 23, 2026

Draft: facts are being checked before publishing.

Kazakhstan’s currency is the tenge (KZT, ₸). Exchange offices are everywhere in cities, and card and QR payments are widespread, so money is easy to sort out.

What currency to bring

  • US dollars and euros are exchanged in every office, often at good rates.
  • A little tenge on arrival is handy for the taxi and a SIM card.

Where to exchange

  • City exchange offices are the main option. Rates on the boards can differ between neighbouring offices, and good ones keep the buy/sell spread small.
  • Airports and stations pay less — change only what you need there.
  • Keep the exchange receipt.

Compare the board rate with the mid-market rate: enter the exchange office rate on the My rate tab in the app and see exactly how many tenge you’ll get.

Cards and payments

In cities you can pay by card or QR almost everywhere. Whether your card works depends on your bank and payment network — check before the trip.

If a terminal offers to charge you in your card’s currency instead of tenge, choose tenge: it’s usually cheaper.

Prices

Tenge prices look big: lunch can cost several thousand tenge. To estimate quickly in your currency, point the price scanner at the menu or tag — the app recognizes the amounts and shows the conversion over the picture.

In short

  1. Bring dollars or euros and compare exchange offices.
  2. Exchange only a little at the airport.
  3. Check which cards will work.
  4. Pay in tenge at card terminals.
  5. Download rates before you go: the converter works offline.
